Skin Cancer Services

Skin cancer is the most common cancer occurring in Ireland and has been on the increase in recent years. More than 10,000 cases of skin cancer are diagnosed annually in Ireland and of these more than 250 are fatal.

Many Irish people have fair skin which leaves them more vulnerable to sun damage and resulting skin cancers.
Skin Cancer can be divided into non-melanoma skin cancer (comprising of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma) and malignant melanoma.
The latter causes the most concern as it is more likely to spread to other parts of the body and to be fatal.

How to Prevent & Diagnose Skin Cancer

One of the main preventative measures we would recommend for skin cancer is reducing exposure to sun by: Avoiding sun as much as possible, using sun hats and sunglasses to shade and sun-block daily to reduce exposure to dangerous UV rays.
As with other forms of cancer, when caught early, the outcome for skin cancer is good. Therefore, annual skin monitoring and reporting of changes in colour or surface of any existing moles to your Dermatologist is very important.
